Gartner: BI Spending Grows 13.4 Percent in 2010

It seems companies turn to business intelligence to give them a competitive edge in a still-shaky economy. Enough of them did it last year to drive a healthy increase in BI spending.

It seems companies turn to business intelligence to give them a competitive edge in a still-shaky economy. Enough of them did it last year to drive a healthy increase in BI spending. According to Gartner, global spending on BI, analytics and performance management software grew 13.4 percent in 2010 to $10.5 billion.

Compare that to the 5.4 percent increase in overall global IT spending Gartner saw in 2010. (Or the slightly larger figure of 7.2 percent offered by rival analyst firm Forrester Research.)

Gartner analyst Dan Sommer tapped a recovering economy and new product releases from IBM, Oracle and other companies as factors driving the increase. SAP was the leading BI vendor with almost 23 percent of total sales, followed by Oracle with 15.6 percent of overall revenue.

According to an InfoWorld story about Gartner's report, BI performed well even in 2009, growing in "low single digits" while total IT spending dropped 2.5 percent.

The next few years should also see healthy growth in BI spending. According to a Forrester Research survey, 49 percent of respondents plan to spend more on BI adoption and expansion during the next 24 months. But Forrester warns that more spending doesn't necessarily equal successful implementations.
