Companies to offer wireless solutions to seven million student-loan borrowers.

Wireless solution provider InPhonic Inc. has completed a deal to offer wireless phones and service plans to Sallie Mae's more than seven million customers. Under the agreement, InPhonic will operate and manage an online wireless store featured on Sallie Mae's shopping and personal finance Web site.

The online store, powered by the Washington, D.C.-based InPhonic, lets Sallie Mae customers research and buy mobile phones and service plans from manufacturers and wireless carriers. Visitors to the wireless store are offered a free Internet-ready phone after choosing a calling plan.

InPhonic provides consumers with an e-commerce platform that takes them through a short list of questions to help them find the calling plans and wireless phones that suit their particular needs. It also includes a wireless wizard that lets current mobile phone users analyze their current plan using a step-by-step process, and then provides alternative plans with lower monthly rates and/or better features.

"Wireless technology is an important addition to the rich set of products and services we offer our customers," said Sallie Mae's senior vice president of e-commerce, Mark Overend. "Our borrowers are young, well-educated consumers who tend to embrace the latest technology. We believe our partnership with InPhonic will be a highly valuable service for our millions of customers."

Founded in 1999, InPhonic has attracted more than 200 customers and more than 3,000 affiliates, including AOL Time Warner, Cisco Systems, Quixtar, Terra Lycos, About.com, MGM Studios and Symbol Technologies. InPhonic supplies equipment, proprietary software and services that allow its clients to deliver information, access corporate data and perform commercial transactions via a wide range of devices, including mobile phones, two-way pagers, PDAs and other handheld computers.

InPhonic provides nationwide wireless coverage via its partnerships with virtually every major mobile phone carrier, including AT&T Wireless, Cingular, Voicestream, Nextel, and Verizon Wireless; and it distributes devices for Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, Kyocera, Samsung, Siemens, Audiovox, Panasonic and Research In Motion (RIM).
