Siebel Snuggles Closer With HP, BEA

Looking to get an edge over rivals in the e-business space, the CRM player redefines its position with some pretty powerful partners.

Siebel Systems Monday reaffirmed its position as a major e-business player by allying itself even closer with its established partners.

The San Mateo, Calif.-based firm said it has named both Hewlett-Packard and BEA Systems to its Siebel Alliance Program. Siebel said the move allows it to maintain a big competitive edge over rivals Oracle , PeopleSoft and SAP AG .

As part of the companies' expanded alliance, Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP and Siebel say they will make Siebel 7.5 available on the HP-UX 11i platform. Siebel 7.5, the latest software release of Siebel eBusiness Applications, is a customer relationship management (CRM) helps improve multichannel sales, marketing, service, and partner and employee relationship management. The company bases the expanded relationship on a foundation of over 1,500 HP ProLiant server installations by its customers. The partnership also has room to grow considering HP boasts a customer base of more than 1.7 million HP-UX installations around the world.

As an added bonus, Siebel said its customers can also benefit from additional HP services for their Siebel platforms, networks and databases. The partnership will be marketed towards each company's joint enterprise-class customers.

"HP and Siebel Systems have a history of providing tried, tested and proven solutions. Customers are already responding positively to this partnership that is delivering the highest levels of customer satisfaction," said Siebel senior vice president of Products Richard Gorman.

With regard to its Web services strategy, Siebel's expanded partnership with BEA now allows Siebel to offer Universal Application Network and Web services-based software. The idea is to let customers using BEA's WebLogic platform to mix their software with Siebel's.

The partnership with BEA is purely strategic. Earlier this summer, CEO Tom Siebel announced his company would embrace J2EE and .NET in future releases. Siebel's software currently is written in C++. The company is currently revising products that tap into both J2EE and .NET applications.

Based on XML and other standards, Universal Application Network includes a library of prepackaged industry-specific business processes; a selection of business process design tools; and an integration server to execute the processes.

Siebel said the partnership is also based on customer demand in the telecommunications, financial and insurance vertical markets. In addition, BEA said its WebLogic Integration tools offer a good mix for Siebel's eBusiness Web Services in relationship to Microsoft .NET Web Services, and Java Web Services.

"BEA is transforming the Web into an integration platform, one that eliminates the traditional divide between development and integration with a convergence methodology that utilizes such standards as Web Services and J2EE," said BEA President, Products Organization Olivier Helleboid. "This simplifies building, integrating and extending applications and business processes. Siebel Systems is a leading provider of eBusiness applications software, and together we share a common vision toward delivering standards-based Web Services."

Currently, Siebel has global partnerships with Microsoft , IBM , Sun Microsystems , Avaya and a host of accounting and consulting firms.
