At its OracleWorld event, Oracle announced multiple new enterprise applications and services, including the Oracle 18c database, a blockchain cloud service, security services and artificial intelligence infused apps for the cloud.

The Oracle 18c database is the latest iteration of the company’s namesake technology platform and like its immediate predecessor, has a focus on cloud deployment. With 18C, Oracle is going beyond just being ready and able to run in the cloud, to having a database that can take advantage of some of the inherent properties of the cloud, like elasticity and hot-plugging for rapid updates.

“This is the most important thing we’ve done in a long, long time,” Larry Ellison, founder and CTO of Oracle said. “The automation does everything. We can guarantee availability of 99.995 percent, less than 30 minutes of planned or unplanned downtime.”

The automation enables rapid scaling up or down to meet demands. It’s also present to provide rapid remediation for any potential security risks. The promise with Oracle Database 18c is when there is a reported security vulnerability, that vulnerability can be automatically repaired on the cloud database without the need for unnecessary downtime

Oracle also announced the Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud, built on top of Oracle Database 18c.

“Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud is designed to deliver industry-leading database technology performance with unmatched flexibility, enterprise scale and simplicity,” Carl Olofson, research vice president, IDC stated. “The intent is to ensure that businesses get more value from their data and modernize how data is managed.”

Artificial Intelligence

In an effort to help make its enterprise applications smarter, Oracle is now adding new artificial intelligence-based apps for finance, human resources, supply chain, manufacturing, commerce, customer service, marketing, and sales professionals.

“The new Adaptive Intelligent Apps enable business users from across the organizations to quickly and easily take advantage of the latest advancements in artificial intelligence,” Steve Miranda, executive vice president of applications development at Oracle stated. “The new AI capabilities combine first- and third-party data with advanced machine learning and sophisticated decision science to deliver the industry’s most powerful AI-based modern business applications.”

Enterprise Blockchain

Blockchain technology first gained public notoriety with its use in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Blockchain is essentially a cryptographically secured, distributed ledger system.

Oracle is now embracing blockchain with is Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service which is part of the Oracle Cloud Platform.

“Blockchain holds the promise to fundamentally transform how business is done, making business-to-business interactions more secure, transparent, and efficient,” Amit Zavery, senior vice president at Oracle Cloud Platform stated. “Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service provides enterprise-grade blockchain capabilities and is able to accelerate innovation for on-premises ERP and cloud-based SaaS and PaaS customers.”

“Enterprises can now streamline operations across their ecosystem and expand their market reach with new revenue streams, sharing data and transacting within and outside the Oracle Cloud,” he added.
