ATG Sees Opportunity in Japan

Following contracts with HP Japan and others, the Cambridge, Mass., firm plans a local language version of its CRM software.

Art Technology Group will release Japanese-language versions of its customer relationship management software as part of a push in the island nation.

The new offering, to be released next month, follows a deals in the country with with: Asahi, a TV network; Hibiya Kadan, a florists; and Hewlett-Packard Japan, a subsidiary of the computer giant.

"It only made sense that we release a Japanese version of our product, removing language barriers and helping us drive our initiatives in the market," said Bernard Girbal, ATG vice president of international operations.

Girbal, a 21-year high-tech executive, joined the company in January to boost sales in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

The project involves translating ATG's user interfaces, allowing business users to customize e-business initiatives.

"Global companies such as HP, with strongholds in both the United States and Japan, will benefit from being able to manage their initiatives in their own language," said Kokichi Matsumoto, marketing director for HP Japan.
