When it comes to enterprise application performance, it’s important to have control and visibility over the infrastructure on which applications run. That’s the promise of AppFormix , a startup that emerged from stealth this week with new technology that can help organizations understand and manage application infrastructure.

AppFormix also announced a $7 million Series A round of funding from August Capital to help grow the company. Sumeet Singh, founder and CEO of AppFormix, explained to Enterprise Apps Today that his company’s technology provides real-time control and monitoring of hybrid cloud infrastructure to enable the best possible application deployment environments.

“The software sits at the intersection of infrastructure and applications and provides dynamic controls that can be tailored to suit the needs of applications,” Singh said. “If you want to make a change that is effective, you need to have real-time visibility into the infrastructure.”

The AppFormix system runs as an agent on the host system, and it can run inside of a Docker container that can run inside of a virtual machine. The technology is not restricted to containers as a deployment mechanism for apps, however.

“We’re not married to any form of virtualization. Our technology is universally applicable and can even run on bare metal servers,” Singh said.

Going a step above the agents is the dashboard system that enables enterprise administrators to see how each resource is performing and how applications consume infrastructure resources.

Fundamentally, Singh noted that almost all systems are shared in some way, which can have an impact on the resources available to applications. The AppFormix dashboard can provide policies on how applications consume resources on a given server or cloud host.

The actual dashboard technology runs behind an enterprise’s firewall for local deployment. A central controller provides a central API interface where policies are configured that can be pushed down to server hosts.

AppFormix also has an analytics component for looking at host performance and resource information. The dashboard sits on top of the controller and the analytics engine, providing visibility and control for both sets of capabilities.

The controller, analytics engine and the dashboard all ship to AppFormix customers as Docker containers. AppFormix’s platform is currently in beta and Singh expect to hit general availability later this year.
