The Oracle Exadata Database Machine is now optimized for rival SAP customers.
Oracle Exadata Database Machines are now certified for SAP applications.
With the new Oracle Exadata certification, all SAP products based on SAP NetWeaver 7.x that are also certified for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 can now be used on Exadata X2 machines, the second generation of the Oracle data warehousing appliances.
Despite the long-running rivalry between the two companies, SAP and Oracle announced a working relationship on Exadata certification a year ago.
SAP last year launched its own in-memory computing platform, HANA (high performance analytic appliance), and the company has also been pushing its Sybase ASE database as an alternative to Oracle for its ERP applications.
Oracle Exadata 2 is an in-memory computing platform for database and database-based applications. It provides high performance for both data warehousing and online transaction processing (OLTP) applications.
In an Oracle whitepaper, Oracle calls Exadata a "must-have" for SAP, saying Exadata provides the benefit of a common infrastructure when using a database for SAP and non-SAP applications, whether using OLTP, data warehousing, or a combination of the two.
By consolidating non-SAP related Oracle databases, a "database farm" is created. According to Oracle, many SAP customers run several Oracle databases with several SAP applications, whether they are databases for SAP ECC 6.0, SCM, SRM, NW, or BW all of these "SAP databases" can be consolidated onto an Oracle Exadata Database Machine that results in benefits and efficient operation.
Oracle also said that when compared with proprietary UNIX hardware, customers can save money by using the Oracle Exadata Database Machine with standard CPUs. Unlike proprietary UNIX hardware, Exadata also offers needs-based future compatibility and progressive technologies with prospects.
Oracle allows customers to choose the hardware at the SAP application server level that is most suited to their needs.
