Karmasphere has announced the results of a survey of Hadoop developers and users that reveals insights into the speed of Hadoop adoption and usage trends.
According to the research report, the top three reasons for using Hadoop, as reported by Hadoop users, were to mine data for improved business intelligence, to reduce the cost of data analysis, and to log analysis.

“Nearly 68% Hadoop projects start as skunkworks. Within a year, 86% of projects have moved to either active development or producton. The longer Hadoop is used, the more useful it is found to be: 65% of organizations
using Hadoop for a year or more indicate more than three reasons for using, as compared to 36% for new users.”
