Vivek Kundra, the first-ever federal CIO, has joined Salesforce.com as its executive vice president of emerging markets. Based on his title, it seems likely Kundra will help Salesforce broaden its market reach beyond North America.

When Vivek Kundra  resigned from his job as the first-ever federal CIO in June, he accepted a plum position at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

Few folks probably expected someone with Kundra’s drive to stay in academe for long. With Kundra’s well-known predilection for cloud computing,  it’s not a complete surprise that he will work for Salesforce.com (NASDAQ:CRM).

Both Salesforce and Kundra have often been described as disruptive. Indeed, Salesforce’s announcement of the news featured a quote from Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff touting Kundra’s “disruptive leadership” and a quote from Kundra himself in which he calls Salesforce “an industry disruptor.”

Kundra will be Salesforce’s executive vice president of emerging markets, though the announcement included no details about Kundra’s specific duties in this role. At about mid-day Monday, in what was apparently his first day on the job, Kundra tweeted “Excited to continue disrupting the status quo! “

Based on his title, it seems likely Kundra will help Salesforce broaden its market reach beyond North America.
