The "L" in the ELK stack gets updated with new features including advanced security capabilities.
Many modern enterprises have adopted the ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) stack to collect, process, search and visualize data.
At the core of the ELK stack is the open-source Logstash project which defines itself as a server-side data processing pipeline - basically it helps to collect logs and then send them to a users' "stash" for searching, which in many cases is Elasticsearch.
On Feb. 6, the Logstash 6.2.0 update was released including multiple incremental new capabilities for users. Among the new features is the Logstash keystore for password and secrets management.
"Tired of keeping passwords in plain text files? Logstash 6.2.0 has got you covered," Logstash developers wrote in a blog post. "We now include a new command line tool to help manage your passwords, API keys, and other configuration data that you want to keep from prying eyes."
Other new features in Logstash 6.2.0 include:
• Added the jdbc_static filter as a default plugin.
• Set better defaults to allow for higher throughput under load. (#8707 and #8702)
• Set the default configuration for RPM/DEB/Docker installations to use Multiple pipelines. • Added a default max size value (100MB) for log files.
• Added compression when log files are rolled (for ZIP-based installs). • Added the ability to specify --pipeline.id from the command line. (#8868)
• Implemented continued improvements to the next generation of execution.
