HP Combines Autonomy and Vertica for Big Data

HP (NYSE: HPQ) is harnessing the technologies of recent acquisitions, Autonomy and Vertica, in its newly expanded Information Optimization portfolio.

HP first announced the acquisition of Vertica, a privately held firm specializing in business intelligence and analytics services, in February. It followed with a deal to buy information management software firm Autonomy Corp. for $10.3B in August.

The HP Vertica Analytics Platform is software to improve real-time performance for demanding business intelligence and analytic workloads and can analyze data on a massive scale. Autonomy’s IDOL 10 (Intelligent Data Operating Layer), also announced today, now integrates with Vertica to provide a single processing layer for forming a conceptual, contextual and real-time understanding of all forms of data, both inside and outside an enterprise.

With the Autonomy deal formally closing just two months ago, HP is announcing a new platform that will help enterprises turn information and ideas into insights to drive better decision making, using the information processing layer from Autonomy and the real-time analytics engine from Vertica.

According to HP, its portfolio of Information Optimization solutions allows organizations to analyze all unstructured, semi-structured and structured information in a consistent, uniform way. The Information Optimization solutions enable organizations to discover and act on types of information that have previously been difficult to analyze. HP calls these types of data human data and extreme data; others call it “big data.”

The challenge for the modern enterprise is to understand and extract the value from a rich sea of human information, which accounts for 85 percent of all corporate data. Human information includes data found in video, audio, call-center conversations, email, texts and social media – all of which traditional databases cannot process. Extreme information is considered the growing data being generated today from sensors and tags.

“For far too long, organizations have confined structured data to relational databases and unstructured data to simplistic keyword matching technologies,” said Mike Lynch, executive vice president for Information Management at HP. “IDOL 10 brings these worlds together, allowing organizations to automatically process, understand, and act on 100 percent of their data, in real-time. The results will be dramatic, as businesses can develop entirely new applications that explore the richness and color of human information that live in unstructured, semi-structured, and structured forms.”

HP Information Optimization is a core component of what HP calls the Instant-On Enterprise. Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.
