Oracle this week is updating its Oracle Enterprise Manager platform with a new update that builds on existing application management capabilities. The Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c release 4 update, provides improved lifecycle and IT operations management features.

Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c debuted in October of 2011, providing users with private cloud lifecycle management capabilities. In the release 4 update, Oracle continues to enhance and expand features.

Cloud Management Capabilities

For cloud lifecycle management, database-as-a-service with disaster recovery and high availability can now be included as part of a self-service catalog. Oracle also has made improvements to software’s cloud chargeback and metering capabilities.

Oracle is also including what it calls “rapid start kits” for cloud application deployment. Dan Koloski, senior director, Systems and Applications Management at Oracle, told Enterprise Apps Today that the kits are designed to enable organizations to quickly get through the set-up phase of private clouds.

“The idea being to expose private cloud self-service resources to the enterprise quickly,” he said.

Compliance and Security

A console that audits security configuration is another new feature. The new capability is about ensuring the security of Enterprise Manager itself, Koloski explained. Existing capabilities in the technology manage the security of the underlying applications that are being managed.

“We look at configuration management and we look at patch levels, and compare that against compliance standards,” Koloski said. “In release 4, we have introduced new security capabilities in the area of compliance.”

Enterprise Manager 12c update 4 now can examine enterprises for compliance with U.S. Department of Defense requirements, including Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG). Going a step further, Koloski said the compliance framework can now be customized to meet specific needs.

For Oracle’s Fusion Middleware customers, the Enterprise Manager 12c release 4 update provides a new guided management capability that has out-of-the-box best practices for management of middleware application deployments. Java Virtual Machine (VM) diagnostics-as-a-service is another new application management feature providing administrators with diagnostics data.
