Oracle announced Tuesday that it is shipping a significant update to its WebCenter Suite 11g user experience portals suite.

WebCenter Suite 11g is one of the packages within Oracle's (NASDAQ: ORCL) Fusion Middleware, which debuted in summer 2009.

“[The suite] enables organizations to develop and deploy internal and external portals and websites, composite applications, mashups, and social and collaboration services all tightly integrated with enterprise applications,” an Oracle spokesperson said in an e-mail to InternetNews.com.

“The new release incorporates capabilities from all of Oracle's different portal products, providing customers with a comprehensive, modern enterprise 2.0 platform,” the spokesperson added.

That idea was underlined by Andy MacMillan, Oracle vice president of marketing.

“The WebCenter Suite provides the user experience platform within the Fusion platform,” he told InternetNews.com. In fact, WebCenter Suite is meant to provide developers and users with tools to simplify creating user experiences for Fusion applications.

“The updates incorporate best-of-breed capabilities from Oracle's entire portfolio of portal products and provide customers with a comprehensive, modern user experience platform for the enterprise and the Web,” an Oracle statement said.

Additionally, the update adds social computing capabilities to existing portals, and expands collaboration using voice and web conferencing, along with instant messaging.

Other new or enhanced features include integration with “common word processing, spreadsheet and email applications,” the statement said.

The update also completely supports the Content Management Interoperability Standard (CMIS), and provides developers with an “extensive” catalog of reusable components.

Despite the fact that it doesn't carry a new version number, however, that doesn't mean that the latest update is unimportant.

“This is a very significant release for us,” MacMillan said.

“By bringing together the best features from our entire portfolio of Enterprise 2.0 products and providing pre-integration with business applications, Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g delivers a modern user experience platform that is ideal for the information-driven workplace,” he added.
