Amazon Bets Big on Big Data Startup

Amazon led the latest round of funding for analytic database vendor ParAccel. Figures were not disclosed, but Amazon was joined by Menlo Ventures, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Bay Partners, Walden International, Tao Venture Capital Partners and Silicon Valley Bank in ParAccel’s Series E funding round.

According to GigaOM, ParAccel, including this latest round of funding, has raised $73 million since 2005. The company, which provides a columnar database, has plans to stay independent with an eye on going public in 2013. A number of ParAccel’s rivals, including Aster Data Systems, Greenplum, Netezza and Vertica Systems, have been acquired recently, The Wall Street Journal reports.
